Modified Atmosphere Packaging

MAP Analyser

Why use Modified Atmosphere Packaging
Modified atmosphere packaging dramatically extends the quality and shelf life of packaged food products. It ensures the food keeps its flavour, texture, appearance and nutritional value for a longer period, benefiting not only the consumer and the food producer, but also the distributor and the retailer.

How does Modified Atmosphere Packaging work
Modified Atmosphere Packaging or MAP works by modifying the composition of the gases within packaged food products or pharmaceuticals, replacing the air with either a single gas or a mixture of gases. This specifically tailored atmosphere slows down the chemical deterioration and the spoilage organisms within the food package.

The gas mixture used to replace the air is dependent on the type of food being packaged, packaging materials and storage temperature. It will generally consist of a mixture of N2, O2 and CO2. It is the distorted ratio of these gases that makes the difference in the prolongation of shelf life.

Food Gas Applications

In today’s environment, food producers are requiring ways to ensure that their food stays fresh longer on the shelves and longer in transit so they can reach further markets.

One of the most popular methods to achieve this is through Modified Atmosphere Packaging or MAP. Modified Atmosphere Packaging is done by flushing a Gas Pack with Oxygen (O2), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) or Nitrogen (N2).

Designed for taking samples from food packages made from flexible or semi-flexible plastic films, the Map-Pak range of MAP analysers or headspace analysers, meets the needs of this evolving industry.

Quality control is of upmost importance when using Modified Atmosphere Packaging and the portability, accuracy and functionally of AGC Instruments MAP analyser means that those within the food industry can rely on it.

We offer two variations of MAP analysers to our customers.
The Map-Pak-O2 measures Oxygen only, and the Map-Pak-CO2 measures Carbon Dioxide only in the food pack.

Medical Gas Analysis

The laws revolving around gas specifications are strict.  Following on from this methods were establised based on Pharma (Europe), UL (USA) and JP (Japan) standards.  These standards govern how medicinal gases are analysed and recorded.

AGC Instruments offers various solutions based on the above standards.  Through use of our industry proven Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD) or our Flame Ionisation Detector (FID), our solution will meet the analytical requirements outlined by the above authorities.

Some of the gases which follow strict protocols include:

            Oxygen (O2)
Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
    Nitrogen (N2
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Helium (He)
Nitric Oxide (NO)

Series 100 FPD GC

Series 100 Flame Photometric Detector FPD Gas Chromatograph

The Series 100 Flame Photometric Detector GC from AGC Instruments is designed to give a response to sulphur and phosphorous compounds, has a selectivity achieved by the inclusion of filters which will only allow wavelengths characteristic of these elements to pass (380nm for sulphur and 526nm for phosphorus).

If only one reducing flame is used phosphorus emission is a linear function of the quantity, while the emission from sulphur is a logarithmic function of the quantity, this latter depending also on the hydrocarbon part of the molecule so that an accurate response calibration for each component injected is required.

Furthermore, with the simultaneous combustion of sulphur and hydrocarbon compounds in the reducing flame an undesirable “quenching” effect occurs, bringing about the reduction, or even the total extinction of sulphur emission. In order to overcome these problems, the AGC Instruments FPD uses an oxidising flame where the components eluting from the column are first burnt.

Series 100 FID GC

Series 100 Flame Ionisation Detector Gas Chromatograph

The AGC Flame Ionisation Detector GC is used to measure concentrations of hydrocarbons within a sampled gas. The presence of hydrocarbons is detectable by burning the sampled gas in an air-hydrogen flame. Burning just pure hydrogen with air produces only trace amounts of ionisation.

The presence of hydrocarbons in the sampled gas, when burnt with an air-hydrogen mix causes high levels of ionisation. The ionisation occurs a result of the carbon atoms present in the sampled gas. The level of ionisation is proportional to the number of carbon atoms within the sample.

Series 100 DID GC

Series 100 Discharge Ionisation Detector Gas Chromatograph

The AGC Series 100 Discharge Ionisation Detector GC has many different systems each specifically engineered to meet the high specifications required by the customer to measure trace impurities in many applications. Each configuration has unique valve and column selections in order to apply different chromatography techniques from Heart Cut to Backflush to Oxygen Removal.

All components are manufactured to the highest standards and are stringently tested to ensure perfection. Our valves are precision made, and are located in Helium purged enclosures to eliminate possible system contamination and produce the utmost in detector sensitivity. Background noise and detector limits are very dependent upon the use of an ultra pure helium carrier gas and the entire instrument being clean and leak-tight.

Series 100 HFADD GC

Series 100 HFADD GC

The AGC Series 100 Argon GC is available in two configurations, depending on the impurities being measured. Using only components of the highest quality, enables AGC Instruments to produce a sensitive Gas Chromatograph specific for the Analysis of impurities in an Argon Matrix Gas.

All fitting used are 1/8” VCR compression that ensures a perfect seal each time. The valves used are mass spec leak tested and housed in an Argon purged enclosure which provides an atmosphere free from air leaks. Thereby ensuring a contamination free environment that will provide excellent stability, sensitivity and a long working life.
